Yarra-Yering-Dry-Red-No3-2014

2014 DRY RED NO.3

$88.00

A unique blend of six Portuguese varieties, Touriga Naςional Tinta Cão, Tinta Amarela, Alvarelhao, Roriz and Sousão, all planted in a natural amphitheatre at the highest and most southerly point of the Yarra Yering vineyard. Perfumed and pretty, the nose immediately commands your attention. Violets and mixed purple fruits dominate, an exact characteristic hard to pin down due to the six varieties all integrating, wine that represents site more than the individual components. Some spices and firm tannins tell of the seriousness of this wine interlaced with some meaty undertones. An adventurous wine begging for bold food matching.

2015 – $86

Aroma: Perfumed and pretty, the nose immediately commands your attention. Violets and mixed purple fruits dominate, an exact characteristic hard to pin down due to the six varieties all integrating, wine that represents site more than the individual components

Palate: Some spices and firm tannins tell of the seriousness of this wine interlaced with some meaty undertones. An adventurous wine begging for bold food matching.

Hand harvested by the team at Yarra Yering, the grapes are destemmed to open fermenters as a ‘field blend’ and foot stomped twice daily as in Portugal.  Maturation for 18 months in 2 pre-used 225litre barrels – yes just 2!

Bottled via gravity without filtration.

Varietals: 44% Touriga Naçional, 31% Tinta Cão, 10% Tinta Roriz, 8% Tinta Amarela, 6% Alvarelhão & 1% Sousão

Region: Yarra Valley (Gruyere)

Season: Good things come in small packages and that is definitely the case for the 2014 wines.   Abundant spring rains followed by a mild summer proved to be perfect conditions.  Due to the blustery conditions over the flowering period yields are down by 60%.  High-Quality but Low-Quantity is the catch cry!.

Vines: Fruit was sourced from 1990 New Territories planting of classic Portuguese grape varieties on a rocky terraced hillside.

Cellaring: Drinking beautifully at present and will continue to evolve for up to 8 years under suitable cellaring conditions.

Analysis: 12.5 % ALC
