17 Apr 2019 Annual Release Weekend
Legendary in Yarra Valley wine folklore
The Yarra Yering Release Weekend!
Historically held on the first weekend in May, the annual release of the Yarra Yering new vintage wines would always draw a crowd. Join us at our home base in Gruyere, Yarra Valley on May 4th and 5th, 2019 to celebrate the release of the 2017 vintage wines and join in our 50th birthday celebrations!
You don’t turn 50 every year so we want to celebrate!
The story as told is that people would come from near and far, lining up at the back of the old house waiting for the rattling of the key. Dr Bailey Carrodus would throw the door open, wearing his tweed jacket, not a minute before the advertised 10am opening time. Desperate customers would shuffle in to sip and taste before securing their miniscule allocation of wine before it was sold offshore. There were cars up and down the drive, they spilled out onto Briarty Road and then, desperate to get their Yarra Yering bottles, onto Maddens Lane. You had to front up, this was your only chance, otherwise the gate would close and you might miss out.
These days our cellar door is open daily from 10am to 5pm (except Christmas Day) in the renovated home of Dr Carrodus. Join us and enjoy the view from his living room as you taste the beauty in the wines crafted from his vineyard.

2017 SEMILLON
Semillon fruit in its purest form conjuring up an image of wet stone. Dominated by a fruit bowl of tangy citrus flesh, pith and peel. The chalky tannin profile sits with the green apple crunchy acid that drives the palate.
2017 DRY WHITE WINE NO. 1
Crunchy red apple freshness and the weight of ripe stone fruits makes for a bright yet generous palate. Citrus poise from the Semillon grapes, minimal skin contact lending ginger spice, some of the weight from maturation in old, neutral oak barrels as well as the Chardonnay fruit.
2017 DRY WHITE WINE NO. 2
Powerful fruit flavours and generosity are hallmarks of this blend. Weight and texture from the varietal mix but also maturation in oak barrels. Pear fruits, soft pillowy texture and custard apple weight.
2017 CHARDONNAY
Finesse combine with pillowy fruit weight, this is a wine that is fine boned as well as generous. Perfectly balanced fruit sit interlaced with a bright citrus acidity. A little pithy texture and an extremely fine grained oak tannin framework.
2017 PINOT NOIR
Cherry fruits explode on the palate then transform into the classic Pinot silky smooth palate. Elegance combined with fine tannin structure. A medium-bodied yet powerful style so immediately delicious.
2018 LIGHT DRY RED WINE
Highly aromatic with violets and mixed cherry fruit aromas, the palate is soft and full of juicy plums, a little bramble grip showing the use of stalks. The perfume and spice of Pinot and the underlying structure of cool climate Shiraz complement each other beautifully.
2017 DRY RED WINE NO.3
Fragrant with wild berries and cardamom spices, some nettle and charcuterie complexity. Leading with the powerful fruit and licorice spice of Touriga Naçional, the Tinta Cão lends its bright and fragrant blue fruit energy. Tinta Roriz brings a savoury depth to the palate to compliment the Tinta Amarela’s floral and bay leaf herbal lift. To tie everything together the finesse of Alvarelhão and the acidity of the Sousão tightens and drives the long palate.
2017 UNDERHILL SHIRAZ
Perfumed cool climate Shriaz that’s medium bodied with a little lick of spice. Loaded with dark cherries and red plums interlaced with a cured meat lift.
2017 DRY RED WINE NO.2
This is a wine that has many personalities and offers layers upon layers of complexity; sweet and savoury all at once. The fragrance is melting pot of violets, plums, savoury spices and bramble.
2017 AGINCOURT CABERNET MALBEC
Perfume is the signature of this wine with lifted bramble, redcurrant and mixed berry fruits. Bright fruit flavours include mulberries, blackberries and blueberries. Fresh cut box hedge bringing a leafy lift.
2017 DRY RED WINE NO.1
Fruit power is the first impression, dark berry fruits and some sage adding a background herbal lift. Oak spice is evident but all in balance with the fruit. The palate shows power and restraint at the same time, the iron fist in a velvet glove.
2017 CARRODUS VIOGNIER
This Viognier is sourced from some of the oldest Viognier vines in the country. Signatory apricot blossom, very lifted white flowers like jasmine and musk stick aromas. Restrained apricot flavours deliver oodles of weight and flavour.
2017 CARRODUS PINOT NOIR
Bramble undergrowth notes and mixed berry fruits with all different colours. A subtle smoky bacon oak envelops the fruit. A quietly brooding and powerful wine with dark fruit, savoury spices and moorish stalk tannins that linger for an age. The words don’t come easy, it might leave you speechless.
2017 CARRODUS CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Blackcurrants, graphite, bay leaf, energy, purity, precision, youthful.
2017 SPARKLING BLANC DE NOIR
Pear and apple with a hint of field honey and floral aromatics. Rich, crisp and clean with hints of brioche and harmonious acidity.
Vintage Report
The vineyard got off to a slow start due to late winter and early spring rain coupled with cold weather. This weather pattern carried on through spring providing tricky growing conditions right up until Autumn and the start of picking. Flowering was later than normal and over an extended period due to cold wet and windy weather.
The early varieties were affected more so than the later ones. A mild summer with rain allowed Yarra Yering’s dry grown vineyard to escape any possible heat stress, with larger than normal bunches due to the rain. But with perfect early Autumn ripening weather, vintage 2017 was another tricky but super vintage.
