Winemaking techniques used are to encourage an exotic floral fragrance coupled by a juicy expansive fruity palate coupled with a fine tannin framework. Highly aromatic with rose petal, blue violets and cherry fruits, the palate has a light touch, is soft and full of juicy plums, a faintest bramble grip from the use of stalks bringing some structure and drive to the finish. These varieties complement each other beautifully with the perfume and spice of the Pinot and the underlying structure of the cool climate Shiraz.
“Pinot was fermented as whole berries; the shiraz as whole bunches, left for 10 days before destemming. Both varieties aged in French oak barriques for 9 months before being blended. 50/50% pinot/shiraz. A harmonious wine. It’s juicy and bright, with the right amount of savouriness to the fragrant fruit and lithe tannins.” – Jane Faulkner, 2022 Halliday Wine Companion.
Pinot noir was fermented with whole berries in 600kg fermenters and hand plunged gently. Shiraz was 100% whole bunch fermented, left untouched for 10 days before destemming to complete ferment as whole berries. The individual components spent 9 months in French oak barriques in our underground cellar before blending and bottling.
Varietals: 50% Pinot Noir, 50% Shiraz
Region: Yarra Valley
Vines: Fruit was sourced from the Yarra Yering Pinot noir block with plantings in 1981. Shiraz was grown on the Waterloo block planted in 1995.
Cellaring: This wine has been made with the intention to be an early drinking style of wine; perfect for the Australian climate, fragrant and delicious in its youth. It will continue to evolve for some years under suitable cellaring conditions however this is not required. Please drink it and enjoy it!
Vintage 2020: A challenging year began with unstable weather during flowering resulting in poor fruit set. A dry summer followed with devastating bushfires in many viticultural regions but lucky for us, the Yarra Valley was spared this time. Late January brought a drop in temperature and regular rainfall. The wines from 2020 have a lot of grace, a cooler season and light crops presents in their fragrance, medium weight and bright acid line.
